Understanding the Adrenal Stress Test

The adrenal glands, often called the “stress glands,” help your body respond to stress. Whether stress comes from external events, such as an earthquake, or internal sources, such as anxiety due to work concerns, the adrenal glands allow your body to adapt. An adrenal stress test assesses your cortisol and DHEA levels. Elevated cortisol levels can result in insomnia, anxiety, sugar cravings, fatigue, weight gain, and bone loss. Low DHEA sulfate levels may indicate adrenal gland disorders, including adrenal insufficiency, Addison’s disease, hypopituitarism, or the effect of glucocorticoid medications.

Test Preparation Requirements

A saliva sample collected four times a day is sufficient to measure cortisol and DHEA levels. Because stress can elevate cortisol, it is recommended to rest before the test. Do not discontinue any medications without consulting your physician.
