Symptoms of Syphilis
Symptoms of syphilis in adults are divided into stages:
1. Early Stage
Early syphilis refers to infections that have been present for a year or less, including the primary and secondary stages. People with early syphilis can easily spread the infection to sexual partners. Most early cases are found among men who have sex with men, but women and unborn children are also at risk.
2. Primary Stage
During the primary stage, a person may notice a single sore or multiple sores at the site of infection. Sores are usually firm, round, and painless, lasting 3β6 weeks. Even if the sore heals without treatment, medical care is still necessary to prevent progression to the secondary stage.
3. Secondary Stage
The secondary stage may include skin rashes and/or sores in the mouth, vagina, or anus (mucous membrane lesions). The rash can appear while the primary sore is healing or several weeks after it has healed. It may appear as rough, red, or reddish-brown spots on the palms or soles and usually does not itch. Other possible symptoms include fever, swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, patchy hair loss, headaches, weight loss, muscle aches, and fatigue. Symptoms may resolve on their own, but treatment is necessary to prevent progression to latent or late stages.
4. Latent and Late Stages
The latent stage occurs when earlier symptoms disappear. Without treatment, syphilis can remain in the body for years without signs. Most people do not develop late-stage syphilis, but when it occurs (10β30 years after infection), it can cause serious complications including difficulty coordinating muscle movements, paralysis, numbness, blindness, dementia, organ damage, and potentially death.
